Best Buy vs Amazon: Where to Actually Buy Electronics in 2026

Both retailers have legitimate strengths. Picking the wrong one can mean paying 20-30% more for the same product, or missing a meaningful warranty advantage. Here's where each one wins.

Best Buy wins when:

  • Buying TVs over 55" — Geek Squad delivery + setup is bundled, often free, and they'll mount the TV on your wall. Amazon ships the TV in a box and you're on your own.
  • Buying laptops — return windows are 15-30 days in-store vs Amazon's 30 days, but Geek Squad lets you bring the laptop back for help with setup. Amazon makes you call support.
  • Buying open-box / refurbished — Best Buy's open-box section consistently undercuts Amazon Renewed by 10-20% on identical models, and the condition grading is more honest.
  • Buying iPhones / Samsung phones — Best Buy frequently runs $100-300 instant savings via carrier activation. Amazon almost never does.
  • Buying things to use the same day — Best Buy has in-store pickup in hours; Amazon takes 1-2 days even with Prime.

Amazon wins when:

  • Buying accessories and cables — Best Buy charges 2-3x the Amazon price on third-party HDMI cables, phone chargers, etc.
  • Buying anything under $100 — Best Buy's prices on low-ticket items are often higher because their margin doesn't justify the floor space.
  • Buying Amazon's house brands — Echo, Fire TV, Kindle, Ring (now owned by Amazon) are only really discounted on Amazon.
  • Buying items that ship in 1-2 days at the same price as Best Buy in-store — convenience wins.
  • Buying tablets that aren't iPads — Amazon's Fire tablet promotions are unmatched.

Where it's a tie (check both)

  • Smart speakers and headphones — both stock the same models at similar prices
  • Game consoles — both at MSRP usually
  • Apple Watch — both at similar pricing, but Best Buy throws in bands more often

Return policy reality check

Best Buy: 15 days for most items, 30 days for My Best Buy Elite members. Returns must be in original packaging.

Amazon: 30 days. Returns easier — drop at UPS/Whole Foods/Kohl's, no packaging needed for many items.

For high-ticket items where you might change your mind: Amazon's easier returns + 30 days is usually safer.
