Kids Toys Clearance: The Post-Holiday Calendar and What to Buy When

Updated May 19, 2026

Toys are one of the most calendar-driven clearance categories in retail. Holidays, back-to-school, and birthday season all create predictable inventory dumps. Knowing the calendar can save 50-80% on the same product bought at the wrong time.

The annual toy markdown calendar

January 1-15
Holiday returns flood every major retailer. The biggest single markdown event of the year for toys. Walmart, Target, Amazon Warehouse all drop holiday Lego, branded sets, electronics, and outdoor gear at 50-70% off.
February
Valentine's-themed toys hit clearance February 15. Less impactful but fun for stuffed animals and plush.
March-April
Winter outdoor toys (sleds, snow gear) clear at 70%+ off as retailers transition to spring. Easter candy and themed toys clear April 1 or shortly after.
May-June
Mother's Day and Father's Day themed gifts hit clearance the following week. Less impactful for kids toys specifically, more for craft/hobby sets.
August
Summer pool toys, water slides, outdoor activity sets clear at 50-70% off as back-to-school season hits.
September-October
Halloween costumes appear at full price, then clear October 31+ at 50%+ off (most kids costumes can be saved for next year).
November 1-15
Pre-Black-Friday slow markdowns on older Lego sets and discontinued lines. Real clearance starts December 26.
December 26-31
Christmas-themed toys clear 50-70% off. Discontinued mainline toys also get pulled and marked down.

The "discontinued Lego" play

Lego sets have a roughly 12-24 month retail lifespan. Once Lego announces a set will be retired (announced ~6 months before pull), the retail price holds steady until pull date, then often appreciates on the secondary market. Buying discontinued Lego at retail clearance (when stores want to clear the last units) is essentially zero-risk:

  • Use it as a kid's gift — no loss
  • Resell within 6-18 months at 1.5-3x retail (most retired sets appreciate)

Watch lego.com/themes for "Retiring Soon" markers. Once a set is marked, Walmart, Target, and Amazon will often clear remaining stock at 25-40% off in the weeks leading up to pull.

Brand-specific markdown patterns

  • Hot Wheels — basic-line markdowns weekly at Walmart/Target. Premium lines (Hot Wheels Premium, Boulevard) clear quarterly with 40-60% off on remaining stock.
  • Barbie — themed playsets (Dreamhouses, vehicles) clear post-Christmas. Standard dolls clear quarterly.
  • Nerf — premium blasters clear after summer (August-October) and post-Christmas. Mainline blasters consistent year-round.
  • Funko Pop — exclusive variants from prior conventions clear at retailer outlets (Hot Topic clearance, GameStop Pop Sale)
  • Marvel / Star Wars action figures — movie-tie-in figures clear 30-60 days after the film leaves theaters

The reseller angle

Toys are one of the most reliable retail-arbitrage categories. Specifically:

  • Discontinued Lego — almost always appreciates
  • Limited-run Funko exclusives — exclusives sell 2-5x retail within 6 months
  • Discontinued board game expansions — Catan, Ticket to Ride expansion packs hold value

Where not to buy clearance toys

  • Anything battery-operated past 18 months — battery contact corrosion is common in unsold inventory
  • Stuffed animals stored in unconditioned space — moisture and dust accumulate. Most retailers store toys properly, but bin/pallet sellers don't.
  • Cap-gun or chemistry sets near expiration — chemical components degrade
